Then, one night, the moor's horizon is illuminated by gunfire, and the far-off crunch of bombs breaks their recent tranquilly by bringing the battle back to them. The theming in this book opens opportunities for History such as looking into what it was like to be an evacuee - Didcot Railway Centre offers WWII experiences to schools. Two boys, David and Tucky, leave London and move to the English countryside with their families to avoid the constant enemy bombings.Friend or Foe is a heart-warming novel from a master story-teller Michael Morpurgo, one of the most prominent representatives of contemporary children's literature of England. It’s miles ahead of An Ocean of Minutes in terms of being compulsively readable, for one thing, and for another thing, it’s quite well written. Many years later after the war, the two men visit the city which was at war, now it is quiet and peaceful again.

Friend or Foe | Book reviews | RGfE - Reading Groups

From the author of War Horse (now a major motion picture directed by Steven Spielberg) comes a stunning children’s story loved by kids, teachers and parents alike. I really do think that I now have a new favourite author, Canadian or otherwise, to champion, and I hope that there’s more like this one in the author’s book writing pipeline. If I had to summarise the main plot of this book, which is quite engrossing, I would say that these two boys, David and his good friend Tucky evacuate somewhere else to be safe from a war. This book allows the reader to develop their knowledge and understanding of the second world war, through the description in the book. The book is also a good one to read aloud but does require some confidence and creativity due to the variety of characters (children, men and women) with different accents (London, West Country and German). He has written over 150 books, including The Butterfly Lion, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Why the Whales Came, The Mozart Question, Shadow, and War Horse, which was adapted for a hugely successful stage production by the National Theatre and then, in 2011, for a film directed by Steven Spielberg.

This book would be a good cross-curricular tool and could tie in well with a history project concerning the Second World War and the life of evacuees. He has written more than forty books for children, including the global hit War Horse, which was made into a Hollywood film by Steven Spielberg in 2011. Many different aspects of life during the war are touched upon and could be used as a study point, e. Michael Monpurgo has an extremely descriptive writing style which makes it very easy for the reader to picture what it was like during the war from a child’s view point. This book, much like war horse shows that kindness can be found in anyone regardless of race or ethnicity.

It’s almost a feminist touch: here’s a guy who’s out to go on a big adventure while the woman stays at home, holding down the fort, so why wouldn’t he be a bit self-absorbed and not need quotation marks around the things he says? So when a German soldier rescues David and asks him for help, he is faced with a dilemma: to help the enemy or not? During the second world war two young boys, played by John Holmes and Mark Luxford, are evacuated from London to the countryside by train.

This book might be categorized under the New Weird fiction genre, of which Jeff VanderMeer seems to be a proponent of. The German pilot saved one of the boys from drowning and was very kind despite the fact that he was shooting and killing innocent people a few days prior. Once the news of David and Tucky ‘arresting’ a German gets out, they are praised by the village and the story makes national news. Initially frightened to be so far away from home and at a different school they quickly settle in to country life. The diary entry should begin by describing waking up at home in the morning and should end with going to bed at Mr Reynolds’ farm.Friend or Foe may not be a Childs choice of book to read, however once reading the children will love it and be eager to read on. Then one night, the distant crump of bombing brings the war back to them and shatters their new-found peace. Hen gets more and more reserved and standoff-ish as Junior prepares for his day in the sun, and pretty soon the duo is fighting just without resorting to throwing things at each other. As Friend or Foe is not one of them, I feel I can recommend this as a classic Morpurgo - children centre stage - not in a fantasy, but in a huge real life drama. The boys help them out by taking food and whisky to warm them up since this is what was requested by them.
