How do you rate a book like this? How do you judge the literary qualities in another human beings memories? I really don't know. There doesn't seem to be any way to do this.

Milne moved to Hartfield in 1925 with his wife and son Christopher, who became the basis for the character Christopher Robin.Apologising to readers and the general public for not returning letters, this book is offered up like an explanation or publicity statement.

Some of Christopher's thoughts about his relationship with his parents, their particular gifts and talents and quotes from his father's "Pooh" books are included and make this a thoughtful, memorable read. Brought up as I was on the Pooh books and poems, I’ve known about this book since it was first published, but for a variety of reasons didn’t choose to read it, believing (as was put about) that it would be bitter and complaining. I was recently watching an excellent TV series on Children’s authors, and reflecting how many of them were unhappy, victims of tragic circumstances or just plain odd. Which led me to remember that I’d read an excellent biography of A A Milne by Ann Thwaite some years ago (borrowed from the library). I got it on Kindle and read it again – it’s an excellent, detailed and full biography of an interesting, if rather difficult and remote man. So it then seemed like the right time to finally read C R Milne’s “The Enchanted Places”. It was beautifully written, (he could give his famous father a run for his money) elegiac and not noticeably bitter or self-pitying. Ann Thwaites’ biography was fairly genteel – she didn’t dig too deeply into the undoubted problems with the Milnes’ marriage, his withdrawn nature and over-protective manner towards his only child. She commented however that he probably only had one successful relationship in his life – with his brother Ken. However, the quotes from “The Enchanted Places” that she did use gave credence to my belief that this was a very bitter, unhappy adult who blamed the books that made his father’s fame and fortune for this. urn:lcp:enchantedplaces00miln:epub:21854ac5-9e58-4ee7-ac36-98c40dbd0651 Extramarc University of Alberta Libraries Foldoutcount 0 Identifier enchantedplaces00miln Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t70v9830d Isbn 0413317102
