It can now be done internally, with the GH5 II’s USB-C port able to carry a constant power supply to the camera or recharge the battery. That’s a big quality-of-life improvement over the original GH5, which required external charging. Image quality There is also a large Live View Finder (LVF) with a magnification ratio of approximately 1.52x / 0.76x (35mm camera equivalent). A high-speed OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display featuring a 3,680K-dot resolution and 100% field of view. Dial down the resolution, however, and it becomes something of a speed demon. The 6K Photo mode offers up to 30fps bursts, and in 4K Photo it goes as fast as 60fps. The downside, of course, is a drop in pixels: in 6K mode your images will be 18MP in size; in 4K, they’re 8MP. Also, these shots are actually frames taken from MP4 videos rather than traditional stills, so you can’t shoot them in raw. The GH5S is designed to fit in with a range of pro video accessories. This is the Lumix XLR microphone adaptor, which enables you to connect two pro microphones.

The original GH5 was a pretty pricey camera when it first came out as a premium hybrid camera right at the top of the Lumix range. Prices have come down since then, partly because the camera has been out for a while now and partly – we assume – to make room for the GH5 II. The price for the new model does look very competitive, even against the original price for the GH5. Which one you choose will depend on how much extra you want t to pay for the GH5 II’s worthwhile but very specific video enhancements and its wireless streaming potential. Thanks to the improved JPEG processing engine, GH5 does a great job with saturation, contrast, hue accuracy, and high ISO noise reduction. Performance Use a card with SD Speed Class with ""Class 4"" or higher when recording motion pictures in [AVCHD] or [MP4(under 28Mbps)]. GH5s holds more onto the natural colours and noise makes images a lot grittier. Dynamic range is roughly the same though. At 3200 ISO, with GH5 the noise starts to be noticeable. With higher ISO, GH5 tries to clean up the noise, and the image gets a lot softer and starts to look very unnatural. A pre-announced firmware update will add support for wired connections to facilitate more stable, higher quality connections, including the ability to tether directly to a smartphone over USB (Android only, at first). The camera will also be able to connect directly to a PC over a wired LAN using RTP/RTSP protocols. Panasonic says this update should arrive by the end of 2021.
