For me, it goes in cycles. I’m constantly changing where I think I’m going to end up. I think it has to be like that because technology is constantly changing. Out in Tech is a non-profit that unites the LGBTQ+ tech community around the world. We do this by creating opportunities for our 40,000 members worldwide to advance their careers, grow their networks, and leverage tech for social change. We envision a tech industry where LGBTQ+ people are empowered, well represented, and have full agency, from intern to CEO.

At Stemettes we’re now adding a charity side, so figuring out how to work with donors will be another massively different kind of relationship. When we started Stemettes in 2013, the stats were that almost 50% of the schools in the country didn’t have any girls doing A-Level Physics. So, these girls feel like they are the only ones in their school even though they aren’t the only ones in the country in that position. So, I asked: “How do we connect these people?” If you’ve got mentors and a network, you’re more likely to have the resilience to stay in STEM.
It’s alarming how much folks feel like they’re being left behind. Understanding tech now, in our everyday lives, shouldn’t be anything to do with the relationship you had with maths at school any more than the music you listen to today should have anything to do with your old music teacher.
