This is the second recent Mandasue Heller book I have read where the central character is a teenager and though didn't dislike the book I didn't enjoy it as much as the first few books I read, I prefer adult main characters. She's a good student who only wants to pass her exams and find a way out of the sink estate in Manchester where she grew up. But Zenith comes with a top class reputation and a location other clubs would kill for, so she reckons she’s more than up for it. And the only person who's offering any help seems to be just as bad as the people she's trying to escape from .When in the 80s, after moving to Manchester, she began working on the scenes of the underground music, having a part in an original rock band, and singing as a part-time in many blues, jazz and soul bands. She has a strong family ethic and does what she has to to look out for her brother by taking a job as well as trying to keep up with studies.
