What makes this poem enjoyable to read however, is Ahlberg's creative use of language and imagery through metaphor. The line "While the teachers in vein, tried to burgle his brain" is particularly original and imaginative, and therefore causes amusement. The songs in the book have particular tunes with one exception. The song 'The Mrs Butler Blues'' can be sing to the tune of any blues song. What a fantastic way of exploring blues music and the differences in tempo, pitch and rhythm. It also explores the approach behind lyric writing. This is a great book of poems by Allan Ahlberg. There is a great range of poems in this book which a teacher could definitely use in a Year 6 class. Forgotten the title or the author of a book? Our BookSleuth is specially designed for you. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments A great poem also is Heard it in the Playground. This poem, Ahlberg states, is for performance. It has repetition, rhyme, different sounds, nonsense words and changing dynamics which would be great to perform with a class. It would be an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. Allan has collaborated with many illustrators, including Andre Amstutz, Gillian Tyler and Katharine McEwen, as well as his late wife, Janet Ahlberg (nee Hall) and his daughter Jessica Ahlberg. He has won numerous awards for his books including, the Kurt Maschler Award in 1986, The Children's Book Award in 1987, the Blue Peter Book Award 2001, and The Children's Book Award: Books for Young Children award 2002.

Allan Ahlberg, a former teacher, postman, plumber's mate and grave digger, is in the super-league of children's writers. He has published over 100 children's books and, with his late wife Janet, created such award-winning picture books as EACH PEACH PEAR PLUM and THE JOLLY CHRISTMAS POSTMAN - both winners of the Greenaway Medal. He has also written prize-winning poetry and fiction for older readers. Heard it in the Playground is a collection of poems based on primary school life. The book is presented in three sections: short poems, songs and long poems. The collection is mostly light-hearted and humorous covering everything from grumpy teachers to the school’s escapee pet hamster. Allan Ahlberg is one of the UK's most acclaimed and successful authors of children's books - including the best-selling Jolly Postman series. Born in Croydon in 1938, he was educated at Sunderland Technical College. Although he dreamed of becoming a writer since the age of twelve, his route to that goal was somewhat circuitous. Other jobs along the way included postman (not an especially jolly one, he recalls), gravedigger, plumber, and teacher. Heard it in the playground is a wonderful collection of poems, based on the setting of a primary school. The book is divided into sections of short, medium and long poems, which means it could adapted to many classes and also to the school day and time constraints. I feel this could make a great group read at the beginning or end of the school day as the short poems could be easily used. urn:lcp:hearditinplaygro0000ahlb:epub:f5de4b17-9bee-46c1-bfce-1051ab554eb1 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier hearditinplaygro0000ahlb Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t51h06h4s Invoice 1652 Isbn 0670823724

This is a great book to read for children as not only does it give an insight into school life - it lets children know that we all experience similar things at school. With songs and poems such as: Whether you are a pupil or a teacher ‘Heard it in the playground’ is a collection of poems and songs that will strike a chord. Allan Ahlberg masterfully conjures a portrait of what it means to a part of primary school, encompassing all the joy, stress and mayhem of daily life.Allan always dreamed of being a writer, but tried his hand at many other jobs before he achieved his ambition. He was a postman, grave-digger, plumber's mate and teacher - it was teaching that gave him such sharp insights into the minds of children, and enabled him to write his perfectly observed poetry about primary school life

Meet Billy McBone and the Mad Professor's Daughter, be amazed by the Longest Kiss Contest, shed a tear for the Boy Without a Name and - if you're a stressed teacher - sing the Mrs Butler Blues. Allan Ahlberg's collection of poems and songs paint a funny and accurate portrait of primary school life, with highly appealing and atmospheric illustrations by Fritz Wegner. This volume of poetry are based on Alan Ahlberg’s experiences as a teacher. They’re highly accessible in terms of structure, and the subject matter is familiar to anyone who has ever set foot in a primary school. Ahlberg’s voice is clear and strong, regardless of whether he’s describing the frustrations of a stressed out teacher in charge of thirty 7 year olds, a longest kiss contest taking place in the cloakroom or the delight and sheer chaos of a dog in the playground.
